Herkimer diamonds are naturally six-sided, double terminated quartz crystals mined from caves in Herkimer, New York. The geologic history of these crystals began 500 million years ago in a shallow sea which was receiving sediments from the ancient Adirondack Mountains. While buried, cavities were created by acidic waters in which the quartz crystals formed during the Carboniferous Period.
